MEET THE ARTIST
The Mendocino Art Association (MCAA) is proud to present another opportunity for the community at large to engage with a nationally recognized artist, Laura Fogg. Ms. Fogg has achieved that recognition for her talent in creating art quilts which have been purchased and displayed in corporations, businesses, and homes around the country.
This is a part of the “Meet the Artist” series, presentations open to the public free of charge. MCAA hopes to reach artists and art lovers with interesting stories of Artists and their life and times and to be an inspiration for their work. Meet and talk with Laura at the Ukiah Garden Club, 1203 West Clay Street, on February 22, from 10am to 12pm.
Laura says “This event will be an opportunity for me to share what inspires me as an artist and where I want to go with my art (and my life) in this coming year. It will also be a bit of a trunk show with some (maybe many) examples of quilts that I have made over the years… and as much talking as people want to hear about my transition from creating mainly landscapes to doing art that focuses on environmental and social issues that are close to me”.
“I think my orientation to doing art is different from many other artists, which can be the beginning of what I hope will be a conversation during the presentation. I want to focus on what we can learn from each other by listening and sharing ideas, and fully expect that I will come away inspired by everyone else” relates MS Fogg.
Jeanette Carson, President of MCAA says “I have had the pleasure of knowing Laura for many years and am constantly amazed by her and her ability use beautiful textiles on one “quilt” and then make the next incredible piece out of plastic bags and discarded items in her desire to make a statement on waste. This event is an opportunity to see the variety of Laura’s work and discuss her process.”
Laura has been an art quilter for twenty years and has shown in major quilt shows across the country, including Visions and Quilt National, and many pieces have won awards. Articles and photos of her work have been published in most quilting magazines and in a number of national and international quilting books and calendars. She has been featured in two documentary films. Locally, Laura is the recipient of two art-related awards, in 2008 the “Women’s Art: Women’s Vision” award at the Women’s History Celebration in Ukiah.- in 2012 the “Arts Champion” in the artist category from the Arts Council of Mendocino County.
Not just an artist, Laura Fogg is involved in fostering art and artists through her 12-year stint on the Board of the Art Center Ukiah and co-op membership in the Corner Gallery. Here more from this talented woman at “Meet the Artist”.
