The long-awaited world premiere of Serenity House opens Friday, May 2 at the Willits Community Theatre. An original play written and directed by Schuyler Marcier, the production is set in a group home for individuals navigating addiction and mental health recovery. Serenity House offers an unflinching yet deeply compassionate exploration of the relationships, struggles, and small triumphs that unfold behind closed doors.
Director Marcier, who works for Redwood Community Services, brings a unique authenticity and emotional truth to this production. Drawing from his professional experience, he has crafted characters that feel lived-in and real—never reduced to stereotypes, but instead fully human, complex, and often disarmingly funny. While Serenity House contains moments of levity and humor, it never makes light of the gravity of its subject matter. Marcier’s deep respect for both clients and staff of group homes is woven into every scene, making the play as heartfelt as it is thought-provoking.
Originally scheduled to debut at Mendocino College in the spring of 2020, Serenity
House was just a few months away from opening when the COVID-19 pandemic forced an abrupt and indefinite postponement. Now, five years later, this world premiere represents not just the debut of a powerful new work, but a moment of artistic catharsis and community celebration.
